By Jackie Case
Opening this Saturday!
26th April - 3rd June

In a world of digital reproduction it’s very difficult to find affordable original pieces, and despite a degree in Graphic Design, Jackie Case has deliberately chosen to create only original drawings. “I just absolutely adore the mysteriously beautiful connection between an artist and a viewer when gazing at an original piece. You can almost feel it breathe. ”

Case is an Australian artist - based in Melbourne - who specialises in very detailed, often quirky and always intriguing small-scale pencil-drawings. In her work she has created a highly-personal world of superhero budgerigars, contemplative elephants, knowing children and fragile trees.

Jackie will officially open her show, 'The Originals', at Sweets Workshop on Saturday the 26th April at 2pm.

Inspired by the quaint villages and townships found in her homeland of England, crafter and designer Katy Dee has created the whimsical, wonderful, and delightfully tactile world of Stitchester, a quiet little village where the houses are soft and the streets are sewn. Stroll down its handmade High Street where you will find cakes & ice cream from the lolly shop, and rosy apples from the grocer’s. Everything is made from fabrics both vintage and new, floral and kitsch - each piece a unique design and a one-off soft sculpture. Not everything in this village is quite as it seams, you will find cakes bigger than trees and a house the size of a child. You will also find things to wear, write on or sit on as well as illustrations of the village. Come and see for yourself and take away your own piece of Stitchester to keep and treasure.

Date: Saturday 26th May – 10th July

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday 26th May

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

Emma works in a room of black painted paper, paint, metal brads & disjointed limbs. Full pieces of paper & scraps litter most surfaces in her flat (she even finds paper pieces in bed). She then carefully creates each body, feather and expression, then pieces them together to create creatures that wriggle & dance.

Date: Saturday 28th April – 22nd May

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday 28th April

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

This series focuses primarily on the gaze, whether it be through a subconscious or conscious visual connection.

Beth Emily focuses on elements relating to the natural realm. The primary focus is on the disposition between the predator and the prey and the burning gaze exchanged in these last moments of life.
David Fooks translates contemporary fashion photography and popular imagery, into a purely aesthetic dialogue between the viewer and the viewed. Using the viewers gaze as a mirror to the subconscious dilution of personal aesthetics; cultural aesthetics; and notions of beauty and the ethereal.

Although the intention of both artists in depicting the gaze is quite different, the overall aim is the same: to connect and absorb the gaze of the viewer into the visible story created by the imagery.

Date: Saturday 31st March – 24th April

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

I like to keep my art focused on small events and subjects, the metamorphosis of insect larvae, the extinction or evolution of a seemingly pointless species . Usually I work on a miniature scale that suits these phenomenon and requires a little more focused attention from the viewer. I work in traditional print media, primarily wood block and lino. I also illustrate using watercolour and gauche.

It’s this blend of fact and fiction giving a sense of wonder, that I try to recreate in my work.

Date: Saturday 3rd – 27th March

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

The birds are collages made from lino print proofs I have created in my studio in Sydenham. These prints were destined for another life, another reason, each holding a beauty of their own and by creating the birds, I have given the prints new life. Some of the birds are Australian natives, others are my own creation. They all have their own personalities, some cheeky, some familiar and but all unique.
Its been a journey I have enjoyed and I hope you enjoy them too.

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday, 17th September. Nia will be at the gallery to open their exhibition and present her collection of intricate paper cuts.

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

My papercuts illustrate a curious, two-dimensional world foxes, teapots, skeletons, birds and little girls lost. There are no brushstrokes or subtle distinctions of tone and shade in this place – only the edge the scalpel creates – evoking a benign kind of humour and wistfulness for the folly and fantasy of childhood. I make them by using a sharp knife while drinking lots of tea; and my house is often filled with confetti.

Date: Saturday 27th August – Wednesday 7th September

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday, 27th August. Kathryn will be at the gallery to open their exhibition and present her claymation

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

When you're not watching, when you blink or stop paying attention, little clay theatre troupes all over the world get to work.

Kathryn Bray was commissioned by the group of puppeteers 'Quiz Worx' to capture a performance by one such troupe.

The process of documenting the performance of malleable silicons or organic materials is traditionally called 'claymation', and was the primary technique Kathryn used in this short film.

Kathryn worked with the clay actors (clactors) on the play 'Your Treasure Your Heart', a children's play (really for adults) based on a teaching of Jesus. The clactor's stellar performance is compelling and evocative, and causes the audience to reflect on the truths in their story.

Date: Saturday 30th July – Wednesday 17th August

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday, 30th July. Denin & Glen will be at the gallery to open their new exhibition

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

When a cake and cookie designer collaborates with an oil painter, the theme of their exhibition, naturally, must be… textile?

Denin Spencer’s delectably powdery process of baking, sculpting and painting exquisite works of edible art, have been documented by her husband, Glen Spencer, through the medium of oil painting. Combining cakes, cookies and canvas, Denin and Glen have based their works around Johannes Vermeer’s painting, ‘The Lacemaker’. The delicate humility of needlework and aspects of Dutch domestic life have been infused throughout the exhibition, leaving the viewer with a unique insight into the meticulous world of cake making, and perhaps a craving for tea and cookies.

Date: Saturday 2nd – Wednesday 27th July

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday, 4th June. Beth will be at the gallery to open her new exhibition

Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “Le Petit Prince”, 1943
Children see things and feel things that adults don’t. I am inspired by the naive and whimsical illustrations of vintage 1940’s children’s books that I have collected from op shops and flea markets. I love the aesthetics of the print – the different colour layers, the texture and ageing of the paper and the imperfections in the registration, which I think contrast delightfully with the utopian imagery.

In this series of work, I endeavour to capture the mischievousness and playful essence of childhood from a nostalgic adult perspective. I am celebrating the imaginary worlds of children along with their endearing and loveable antics. This series reminisces sentimental memories of my own childhood and reflects a longing for the simple and carefree.
