Home Away From Home...

Today on another trip to The Bower in Marrickville we picked up a great desk which was for sale. It just needs a few repairs and it will a great edition to the shop's fit out.

For those of you that don't know The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre Co-operative Ltd collects and in some cases repairs preloved household goods then resells them to the local community, diverting 'waste' from the Sydney metropolitan municipal waste stream.

All funds from this process cover the cost of this service, as well as our many educational initiatives aimed at informing the community about waste reduction and sustainable practices.

Display Chair

We picked up this very well loved wooden chair today, while on holidays on the south coast of New South Wales. We spotted it as we were on our way to the beach outside this great shop in Thirroul called Retro Wombat. I'm so glad we stopped and had a look inside, we'll just have to give it a clean with some soap and water and it will be ready to use for displaying items in our shop.

The Counter

This is our counter, its a neat-o 1950's/1960's cabinet we picked up today from the Bower in Marrickville. It came complete with a pink interior, laminated top, satin lining and a photo from its former life as a home bar. If only it could talk, i'm sure it could tell us some stories of dinner parties, cocktail evenings and fondue nights.

Logo Design

Today we worked on designing our company logo. Our goal was to create a typographic logo which was graphic, unique, modern, engaging, bold and instantly recognisable.

Stylistically the typefaces we looked at were a mix of the classic, graceful, stylized and geometric shapes of the Art Deco movement with the unrefined nature of modern hand drawn script styles.

We began by splitting our company name into its two components and explored the use of these juxtaposing type-styles to create an interesting logo design. After a few attempts we decided to divide the word workshop into two separate words, work and shop by using a cleverly placed (and originally purely accidental) line break and hyphen. The use of this simple device helped reflect the nature of our business (as a place of work and a retail shop) through a fun play on words.

Make An Appointment?... Hell Yes!

We made an appointment with the Real Estate agent to see this vacant shop in Summer Hill today. From outside it seems a little small, but it is part of a fantastic Art Deco building and the location seems right. Once inside our minds started running with the vast possibilities of this space. I think we're in love.

...We Jumped In

...and knew that we never wanted to go back to work.
